Des Moines County is located in Southeast Iowa. It is named for the Des Moines River, which runs south of the county.
The seat and the largest city are both Burlington.
Des Moines County borders Louisa, Lee and Henry Counties in Iowa; as well as Henderson and Hancock Counties in Illinois.
Main highways through the county include US-34 and US-61.
